When I asked ChatGPT, it said GOOGL is slightly more expensive because it has voting power, but looking around here, it seems most people buy GOOGL.

As far as I know, the only difference is whether shareholders have voting rights or not. GOOGL has voting rights, and GOOG doesn't...

The two move 99.9% identically anyway. It doesn't matter which one you buy. There is no reason to bother asking why someone chose one over the other between GOOG and GOOGL.

Even looking at various AI-related documentaries and gurus' analyses, it ultimately comes down to Google.

In any case, since the founders (Larry Page, Sergey Brin) hold a large amount of unlisted shares (Class B) carrying 10 votes per share, even if individual investors buy GOOGL and acquire voting rights, it is nearly impossible to influence the company's management. Therefore, if you want to at least feel like you're exercising voting rights, you choose GOOGL; if you don't care about that and want to benefit from company share buybacks or target a timing when it is even 0.1% cheaper, you choose GOOG. In fact, from an individual investor's perspective, it makes no difference which of the two you buy.

Share buyback benefit: When Alphabet conducts share buybacks to enhance shareholder value, it mainly purchases and retires GOOG (Class C) shares. Buying back a large amount of stock reduces the number of outstanding shares in circulation, which helps boost the stock price.
Shares for employee compensation: When Alphabet gives stock options or equity compensation to Google employees, it issues GOOG shares. As a result, trading volume in the market is high and liquidity is abundant.
Capitalizing on slight price differences: Very occasionally, depending on market supply and demand, there are moments when GOOG trades about $1 to $2 cheaper than GOOGL. Institutions or individuals who have no interest in voting rights buy GOOG when they want to buy even just 1% cheaper.
