Launch of Official US-China AI Consultation Body
The United States and China have agreed to hold their first official high-level AI talks in September. This meeting is a follow-up to the Trump-Xi summit in May and is scheduled to be held before Xi's planned visit to the United States in late September. On the US side, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is reportedly leading the delegation. The main agenda includes the military application of AI, cybersecurity, advanced AI regulations, and technology safety measures.

Additionally, the Manila meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will proceed as an official schedule, with preparations for the summit and stabilizing relations expected to be the main agenda.

Rather than a short-term positive boost, the inclusion of the US-China AI consultative body on the official diplomatic agenda can be interpreted as a move by both countries to manage competition in strategic industries within institutional negotiation channels. In other words, there is an increased likelihood that the AI competition will shift toward manageable competition rather than an all-out clash.
